The main character is actually named Theophile Semps. He is the owner of the Grand Palace Destiny Hotel ; and the infamous serial killer better known as "Mephisto Pheles" (which is an anagram of his name). A seductive and charismatic man who hides his self-obsessed and narcissistic personnality under a mask.

Mr. Semps is actually dead and trapped in Limbo. The price he has to pay for his sins is to relive them all again and again and again. He starts by not remembering the truth, searching for some kind of lost lover instead. Then he has to gather all the clues of each murder. The closer he gets to the truth, the madder he becomes. Uncanny things start to torment him, like "The Shadow". But this one is particular. This dark specter is actually a past and corrupted version of himself, prisoner of this place.

After solving each murder, including his own suicide (being the last tarot card of his life masterpiece), Theophile will have regained all his memories... only to better forget them and start over his inquiry to find Ophelia. Speaking of her, Ophelia isn't Theophile's lover. She was indeed in love with him, but she was his puppet, and his last victim.
